Breast Lump
I feel a lump in my breast. What should I do?
If you feel a lump in your breast, the first thing to do is talk to your doctor. Your doctor will examine your breasts to decide if your lump needs more evaluation.
Most breast lumps are benign (not cancerous). Your doctor may recommend a mammogram, a breast ultrasound, or both to make sure that your lump is not cancerous.
Some possible results of your imaging tests include
- Normal breast tissue
- A cyst, which is a pocket of fluid that is not associated with cancer
- A mass that is not suspicious but needs follow up to make sure it doesn’t grow or change
- A suspicious finding that needs a needle biopsy for more information
If you have a new breast lump and your imaging tests are normal, you should follow up with your doctor, especially if your lump is growing or changing. Some cancers may have a normal appearance on imaging tests.
Most breast lumps are not cancer, but it’s important to have your lump evaluated. If you feel a lump in your breast, talk to your doctor.
