Abdominal aortic aneurysm, also known as triple A, is a leading cause of sudden death for men over age 60.
Triple A is treatable if detected early. Warning signs may include intense back or abdominal pain, rapid pulse, nausea, vomiting, excessive sweating, and shock. Major risk factors include a family history of triple A, smoking and high blood pressure.
It is recommended that men between the ages of 65 and 75 who have smoked get a one-time screening test. However, men with a family history of triple A should begin screening at age 60.
Screening is performed using abdominal ultrasound which involves the use of a small transducer (probe) and gel to expose the body to sound waves that produce pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound is safe and painless.
