Prostate Cancer
When might I need an imaging test for prostate cancer?
Typically, patients are not screened with imaging but instead with a blood test called PSA. Patients may also be screened with rectal examination.
If the PSA is elevated or the prostate exam is abnormal, then the next test usually recommended is an ultrasound guided biopsy of the prostate gland.
Other types of imaging tests may be used for prostate cancer. These include MR, CT, PET/CT, Bone Scan and Ultrasound.
Some examples where your physician may recommend imaging for assessment of prostate cancer:
- MRI may be used to help target ultrasound guided biopsy.
- MRI may be used to help stage known prostate cancer to determine the best treatment.
- MRI may be used in patients with low grade cancer who choose active surveillance to monitor for disease progression.
- CT, bone scan, and PET may be used in known prostate cancer patients to help with staging.
Imaging tests can be helpful for prostate cancer detection, screening and surveillance. Talk to your doctor to find out if imaging is right for you.
